Kosovo: The US and the EU support a Political Process linked to Organized Crime

Should the world recognise an independent Kosovo?

European Union foreign ministers have failed to agree a joint position on Kosovo's declaration of independence. How does this affect Kosovo's new status following Sunday's secession?

Viewpoint: The EU's toughest operation

The Russians have branded the EU's police and justice mission to Kosovo illegal but Roy Reeve, the British diplomat who has been planning it, insists he has not encountered substantial opposition on the ground.

He tells the BBC News website of his hopes for the mission.

Kosovo stirs Balkan neighbours

Bosnian Serb protesters have thrown stones at Western consulates, in a further display of anger at Kosovo's declaration of independence.

Kosovo 'tool kit for separatists'

Kosovo's independence has provided a tool kit for secessionist movements in Europe and beyond, Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic has said.

'Kosovo's freedom is worth clash with Russia'

Confrontation with Russia is a price worth paying for Kosovo's independence, a senior Western official said yesterday.

Note that Mr. De Quettteville never once names this alleged "senior Western official".

This is the kind of propaganda that gets put out (as completely nutty as it sounds) to make people believe that the US/EU/NATO-backed "independence" of Kosovo will have absolutely no geopolitical repercussions.

I doubt seriously that this alleged "senior Western official" has ever studied history; because those who do not understand the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them.(MR)

Opening a Pandora's Box: Kosovo "Independence" and the Project for a "New Middle East"

Western public opinion has been misled. Unfolding events and realities on the ground in the former Yugoslavia have been carefully manipulated.

Germany and the U.S. have deep-seated geo-strategic interests in dividing Yugoslavia. Washington, D.C. and Berlin have also been the first governments to recognize the secessionist states, which resulted from the breakup of the Yugoslav federation.

A Postmodern Declaration

Parallels between Kosovo in 2008 and Bosnia in 1908 are relevant, but not only because, whatever legal trickery the west uses to override UN security council resolution 1244 – which kept Kosovo in Serbia – the proclamation of the new state will have incalculable long-term consequences: on secessionist movements from Belgium to the Black Sea via Bosnia, on relations with China and Russia, and on the international system as a whole. They are also relevant because the last thing the new state proclaimed in Pristina on Sunday will be is independent. Instead, what has now emerged south of the Ibar river is a postmodern state, an entity that may be sovereign in name but is a US-EU protectorate in practice.

Looks like Palestine is right on the verge of pulling a Kosovo.

But if this is the case, they had better have their ducks in a row in terms of regional and international support, which, of course, Israel will condemn with every bit of firepower they have.

Nato troops called in as mobs torch checkpoints on Kosovan border

The protesters tipped over metal sheds that housed Customs services, sending them sliding down the hillside, before setting fire to the remaining buildings. A local policeman at the scene reported: “We couldn’t do anything, we just moved away as there were only a few of us compared with the group of very angry Serbs.”

We haven't seen anything yet, in terms of the ramifications of Kosovo having declared its independence.(MR)

After Kosovo, who's next?

Canada stayed on the fence yesterday as the United States led Western recognition of Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence from Serbia, and Russia opposed it.

Canada should recognize Kosovo: Duceppe

MONTREAL -- Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe says recognition of the breakaway state of Kosovo as an independent country would not change the standing Canadian rules for Quebec separation.

Recognize Kosovo

Kosovo's rupture with Serbia was sealed the day Slobodan Milosevic despatched troops to crush the rebellious province in 1999 during the Balkan wars. Some 10,000 Kosovars died. The United States, Canada and European allies bombed Serbia to force an end to the ethnic cleansing, and the United Nations made Kosovo a protectorate.

Canada tips its hand with silence on Kosovo

OTTAWA -- Kosovo has split the nations of the world into two clubs: those who fear their own disintegration and those who do not. The Canadian government has signalled through silence that secession, even in the Balkans, is still too close to home.

Serbian ambassador says Kosovo is dangerous precedent for separatist movements

Serbia's ambassador to Canada says recognizing Kosovo as an independent country is a "worldwide dangerous precedent" and he's hoping Ottawa doesn't follow the lead of other world powers which have quickly embraced the separation of the territory.

This dependent independence is the least worst solution for Kosovo

When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands that have connected them with another ... they will do so only solemnly swearing to respect in every particular the conditions of the EU, the OSCE, Nato, the International criminal tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, and the comprehensive proposal of the UN special envoy, Martti Ahtisaari, "including through priority adaptation of the legislation included in its annex XII". Kosovo border secured as Serbs turn up heat

Nato troops and UN police moved to secure Kosovo's northern borders yesterday as ethnic Serbs mounted more demonstrations to assert Serbian control of the northern portion of the country.

Serbia to hold rally to vent anger over Kosovo

Serbia plans to stage a mass protest rally in Belgrade on Thursday against Kosovo's declaration of independence, underlining Serb anger at the loss of their religious heartland.
