Internationally Known Religious Scholar and Friend of World Leaders Dies at 89

Imam Vehbi Ismail, internationally known religious scholar, author and leader of the Albanian Muslims in North America, passed away from natural causes in his Harper Woods, Michigan (USA) home on Saturday, May 17, 2008.

Born in Shkoder, Albania on November 25, 1919 to Haji Ismail Alkovaj, the Grand Mufti of the Muslim faith in Albania, Imam Ismail started his studies in theology at The Islamic Seminary in Albania’s capital, Tirana.

In 1937, Imam Ismail left his native Albania to study Islam at the world famous Al-Azhar University in Alexandria, Egypt, founded in 989AD. Imam Ismail received the highest honors achievable at Al-Azhar.

It was at Al-Azhar that he started his prolific writing about Islam, the Prophet Muhammad and interpreting the meaning of the Quran as well as the translating of hundreds of books from Albanian, Turkish, Persian and French to Arabic.

In 1945, Imam Ismail was advised by his father not to return to Albania, as the Communists had taken control of all mosques and abolished religion of any kind throughout the country. The new Communist regime of Albania seized all holdings of religious groups, including the holdings of the Grand Mufti and his family. Imam Ismail’s family then spent the last years of their lives in concentration camps, never to see Imam Ismail again.

During his stay in Egypt, Imam Ismail established himself as an expert on the Quran and Islam. He became a close personal friend of then King Farouk of Egypt. Farouk and Imam Ismail spent many religious holidays together discussing the meaning of the Quran and the future of Egypt.

In 1949, Imam Ismail was summoned to the United States by the Albanian Muslims who had fled Europe. He became the head of the Albanian Muslims in North America, a position he held for over fifty years. During this time, Imam Ismail used his relationships with governing officials in the Middle East and the Balkans to guide the United States in aiding those fighting for the elimination of Communism in the region. He became close friends former Michigan Governor G. Mennen Williams and other government officials who wanted to understand the workings of countries in turmoil in the Middle East.

In 1957, Imam Ismail was asked to leave Detroit to become one of the religious leaders of the Islamic Center of Washington, DC. He graciously declined the offer, and instead stood by former President Dwight D. Eisenhower as he gave his speech at the opening ceremonies, so that he continue his committment to the Albanian Muslims in North America.

In 1962, Imam Ismail published “Muhammad, The Last Prophet”. The book, initially published in English, was translated into eight other languages. It is still used in high schools around the world as required reading for students studying the Middle East and Islam.

By this time, Imam Ismail had become internationally known as one of the most prolific writers on Islam and the Quran of the 20th century, publishing more that 35 books which were translating into over 25 different languages. At his death, he had another book in progress, which was to be published in early 2009.

In 1999, Imam Ismail was called on again to help with the conflicts in Kosovo, through his long time friend, Kosovo President Ibrahim Rugova. When Rugova visited the United States, the two met for many hours on the need for democracy in the region. Imam Ismail was honored for these efforts and his other work towards peace, towards establishing the Albanian Muslim communities throughout North America and on being one of America’s longest serving clerics by way of a proclamation given in his honor during an open session of the United States Senate in Washington, DC on November 16, 1999.
Imam Ismail’s biggest joy in the later years of his life was the time he spent with his grandsons Jonathan, Scott and Alex. While hospitalized under critical condition in 1994, when doctors recommended hospice to his family, he flatly told the doctors that is was not his time to die, as he had to live to see the high school graduation of his first grandson, Jonathan. Against the advice of his doctors, in 80 plus degree weather, he got his wish when he saw his grandson, Jonathan, being given his high school graduation diploma from Grosse Pointe North High School by his father, Ahmed, in June 2007.

On May 15, 2008, after a two week hospitalization, doctors advised the Ismail family that no more could medically be done for Imam Ismail. Hospice representatives visited with him and his family on the evening prior to his transport home. When asked services he wanted from hospice, he was very quick to answer the question. First, he said that he had to be helped in learning to use his walker so that he could walk from the house to a car in the driveway. Second, he said, the hospice workers had to help him gain enough strength so that he would be able to sit during the car ride to the homes and hospitals of his fellow Muslims to offer them comfort, praying with them in their times of need.

Imam Ismail came home the next day and cried tears of joy when he found himself surrounded with the gift his son Ahmed and his grandson Alex had told him would be a surprise, the relocation of a portion of his religious library from the mosque to the living room of his Harper Woods home. He died a few hours later, in his favorite chair, reading the Quran.

Imam Ismail’s death was broadcast on European television, and overseas called flooded into the Ismail home. For religious reasons, the funeral services could not be delayed for many overseas visitors to attend. The funeral services were performed at AH Peters Funeral Home in Grosse Pointe Woods, MI by Wisconsin Imam Ilaz Fetai in Albanian and by South African Imam Ackmat Salie in English in addition to twelve other Islamic clerics from around the world after over 1,500 mourners from the United States and Europe paid their respects.

Imam Ismail is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty, daughter Fatima, sons Ahmed (Mary Ann) of Grosse Pointe Woods, MI, and Ali (Judy) of Ft. Lauderdale and three grandsons, Jonathan, Scott and Alex.

His wish was that no flowers be sent, and that instead donations be sent to the “Books for Albania’s Children” fund, in care of Comerica Bank, 20200 Mack Avenue, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI (USA). The fund was established to digitize Imam Ismail’s rare religious book collection and to establish a library of his Albanian language books in his birth town of Shkoder, Albania.

Imam Vehbi Ismaili, R.I.P

For the record, I did not put this in the Islamic thread because Vehbi Ismaili was a major figure for not just the Islamic cause but for all Albanians as well. He was good for all man kind.

If you did or did not know him, Imam Vehbi Ismaili was an amazing man. Words can't express what a man he was. Later I'll have more bio information but for now I thought I'd post his death since the services and funeral will be soon (to get the word out). Once my dad returns from his house, I should know more on the details. I also plan to call his wife later myself so I will post an update.

Imami was in his 90's, exactly how old, I'll have to post later however; his whole life was dedicated to the Albanian and Islamic cause. He is known world wide, and has published many books himself. I am saddened to report his death to you all. Last week when I saw him at the hospital, I could tell he wasn't going to make it much longer, yet his spirit and words were so amazingly great, brought me to tears. Truly touching. I had plans to see him today unfortunately however; he didn’t make it that far.

God misses Washington DC by miles

In an unusual display of righteous anger, God aimed at Washington DC with his high wind tornadoes, and missed by over 100 miles! It wasn't clear immediately why He was off-target by such a wide margin, but weather officials at Regent University's Baptist Weather Center were quick to point out that they have documented evidence that this is not His first-ever wide-margin miss with tornado strikes.

DC Madam: "They will make it look like suicide"

Another convenient hanging

Sadly, I was not shocked to hear Thursday's news that former DC madam Deborah Jeane Palfrey -recently convicted on prostitution charges - was found dead, at the end of a nylon rope, in a shed on her mother's property down in Tarpon Springs, Florida. Florida. Man, what a state. From the Pensacola to the Keys - corruption to the "nth" degree. Need to fix elections? Go to Florida. Need to train CIA operatives to fly suicide missions? Go to Florida. Need to use an international airport as a drop-off point for your multi-million dollar drug shipments? Go to Florida. Need to conveniently murder a woman connected to a case involving high-profile government officials who like it kinky? Go to Florida. It's no surprise that a Bush was recently a governor of the Sunshine State.

Insects using plants as telephones

A team of Dutch ecologists has found that subterranean and aboveground herbivorous insects use plants to communicate. 'Subterranean insects issue chemical warning signals via the leaves of the plant. This way, aboveground insects are alerted that the plant is already occupied.' This means that by using 'green telephone lines,' the two kinds of insects can avoid to compete for the same plant, allowing for faster growth for both species.

The Meje Massacre in Kosova

Meje on 27 April 1999 ( 9 Years Later )

They were killed by Serb forces on April 1999, and were exhumed from a mass grave in Batajnica near Belgrade.

A mass grave of 500 had been discovered in Serbia and, after forensic DNA checks carried out by Scotland Yard, the bodies are being returned to Kosova in groups of 30 or 50 at a time.

Witnesses who testified at The Hague said Stojanovic had ordered the massacre in Meje in Gjakove [Djakovica] on 27 April 1999.

The largest known mass killing, at Meja on April 27. Sebastian Junger describes the grim events:

Shortly before dawn ... according to locals, a large contingent of Yugoslav army troops garrisoned in Junik started moving eastward through the valley, dragging men from their houses and pushing them into trucks. "Go to Albania!" they screamed at the women before driving on to the next town with their prisoners. By the time they got to Meja they had collected as many as 300 men. The regular army took up positions around the town while the militia and paramilitaries went through the houses grabbing the last few villagers and shoving them out into the road. The men were surrounded by fields most of them had worked in their whole lives, and they could look up and see mountains they'd admired since they were children. Around noon the first group was led to the compost heap, gunned down, and burned under piles of cornhusks. A few minutes later a group of about 70 were forced to lie down in three neat rows and were machine-gunned in the back. The rest -- about 35 men -- were taken to a farmhouse along the Gjakove [Djakovica] road, pushed into one of the rooms, and then shot through the windows at point-blank range. The militiamen who did this then stepped inside, finished them off with shots to the head, and burned the house down. They walked away singing.

New Search for Oil in Albania

24 April 2008 Tirana _ DWM, a Manas Petroleum subsidiary, announced a new exploration project on Monday to refine nine identified prospects of oil and gas reserves in Albania.

In January, the company announced the find of a vast oil and gas reserve in the north of the country.

The find was based on an independent report compiled by Gustavson Associates LLC on behalf of Manas Petroleum Corporation, which has been awarded a contract by the Albanian government to explore the north for oil and gas reserves.

According to their findings, the unproven reserve holds up to 2.987 billion barrels of oil and 3.014 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

If the oil is capped with a layer of gas, Gustavson calculates the field may total 1.4 billion barrels of light oil and 15 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

If only gas is present, the reserve is expected to contain 28 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

Of the approximately 345 million barrels of oil reserves in the Balkans, 198 million barrels are located in Albania .

Proven natural gas reserves in the Balkans region add up to approximately 2.7 trillion cubic feet.

The company sees Albania as a key asset and presently intends to retain a 100% interest in the project while also evaluating further onshore opportunities in the country.

Under the licence awarded to Manas Petroleum Corporation, the company is allowed to explore oil and gas reserves in an area approximately 780,000 acres in size, located along a geological fold in north-western Albania.

'The probability of success for a wildcat well in a structurally complex area such as this, is relatively high due to the fact that there exists a proven hydrocarbon source and analogous production exists only 20 to 30 km away,' notes Gustavson in the report.

Manas is currently still analysing the findings and will make further announcements on its next steps in the coming weeks.

The corporation is an important player in the development of Albania's terrestrial oil and gas reserves.

In December 2007, Albania's Council of Ministers agreed to allow DWM Petroleum AG, a subsidiary of Manas, to assist in the exploration, development and production of Albania's land-based hydrocarbon reserves in conjunction with the government's Agency of Natural Resources.

Will the CIA Kill or Oust Ecuador’s President?

So, why does the U.S. military have a $60 million military base in Ecuador? The base is part of the U.S. government's much-vaunted 30-year-old war on drugs, one of the U.S. Empire's never-ending wars around the world. The base houses Awacs surveillance planes whose purported mission is to search for international drug smugglers.

Notice that anytime the US declares "war" on anything, as a matter of public policy, whatever has been identified as the object of that :"war" appears to get worse, not better?

The good news for Americans in all this is that the Ecuadorian people are doing their best to rid their country of the CIA and the U.S. military. Maybe the Ecuadorans will start a trend in which all other countries will do the same. While it would obviously be best if the American people were to dismantle their government’s overseas empire themselves, having foreigners do it instead by throwing the CIA and the Pentagon out of their countries would be just as effective and beneficial — to both the United States and the people of the world.

E Verteta4_U: Kosovars better act quick and do the same.

The Coming War with Iran: It's About the Oil, Stupid

The American oil wars are being launched out of weakness, not strength. The American economy is teetering and without control of the remaining oil it will collapse. There will be massive chaos in any case, when only enough oil remains for the American elite and whomever they choose to share it with.

It's not about greed any more. It's about survival. Because the leadership of this country was initially too greedy to switch from oil to solar, wind, geothermal and other renewable alternatives, it may now be too late. Had the hundreds of billions of dollars poured into the invasion and occupation of Iraq been put into alternative energy the world might have had a fighting chance. Now that is far from certain.

And I still have to wonder: if the US and/or Israel do attack Iran, what is Russia going to do?

Sit back and do nothing, watching how it plays out?<>I wouldn't bet on it. (MR)

Following are key facts about Albania, Croatia and Macedonia, the Balkan countries hoping to be invited to join NATO this week. All three already have small contingents of troops serving in United Nations and NATO-led missions.

Botach Tactical and AEY Inc., family arms dealerships

Efraim's dad, Michael Diveroli, told the media that he had nothing to do with his son's arms trading.

"I would prefer he became a nice Jewish doctor or lawyer rather than an arms dealer. He's never asked for my approval on the company. He doesn't always take my advice, I don't influence him. As a father of a boy genius he's hard to control," Michael Diveroli told WFOR-TV.

That's hard to believe. Fedvendor.com lists Michael Diveroli as AEY's sales manager and its government business contact. The elder Diveroli incorporated AEY in 1999 and installed his son as president in 2005. Michael Diveroli also has two businesses of his own that get government contracts for police equipment and office supplies.

Pentagon Awards Contract Worth Up To $300 Million To Amateurs.

Pentagon Gives 22 y/o $300 Million Arms Contract

Efraim Diveroli talks with Kosta Trebicka

A telephone conversation between 22 year old Efraim Diveroli, President of Miami based AEY, Inc. and Mr. Kosta Trebicka, an Albanian businessman in regards to ammunition purchases for US and Afghan troops. AEY Inc. became the main supplier of munitions to Afghanistan's army and police forces in 2003 and provided ammunition that was more than 40 years old and in decomposing packaging. The House Oversight Committee is currently investigating why the the Pentagon gave the inexperienced 22 year old a $300 million contract to provide ammunition to Afghanistan.

US gave $300m arms contract to 22-year-old with criminal record

The Pentagon entrusted a 22-year-old previously arrested for domestic violence and having a forged driving licence to be the main supplier of ammunition to Afghan forces at the height of the battle against the Taliban, it was reported yesterday.

...

AEY also supplied weapons to US agencies, and rifles to Iraqi forces.

Okay, this deal needs a full investigation. How did this kid, with criminal record and fake driver;s license, wind up with the contracts to supply arms to the Army, the Iraqis, and Us Government agencies like DEA and FBI? (MR)

The younger Diveroli's munitions experience appeared to be limited to a short-lived job in Los Angeles for Botach Tactical, a military and police supply company owned by his uncle, Bar-Kochba Botach.

Weird Al Gore, 'environmentalist'

Since the U.S.-led NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999, the incidence of cancer in Serbia, which received the brunt of the bombing, has at least doubled. Thousands of tons of bombs and missiles carrying depleted uranium were dropped on the country. The radioactive dust was inhaled not just by those nearby, but others unfortunate enough to be downwind. In addition, at least some of the deadly residue has seeped down to contaminate the water table in certain regions of Serbia.

Kosovo, whose Albanian population was supposed to be "saved" by the bombing, has become a DU dump. No one has the exact figures of the incidents of cancer among the majority Albanian population now. The United Nations, which is in charge of the civil administration of the province, is either not releasing figures, not conducting the necessary studies or not revealing what it knows. However, a number of NATO soldiers, especially from Italy, have gone home ill, some terminally.

Nearby, in Bosnia, during 1994-95, U.S. planes dropped DU ordnance on or near several population centers. In one of them, Hadzici near Sarajevo, cancer reached epidemic proportions by the late 1990s.

The thousands of overflights made by U.S. and other NATO planes on their bombing sorties heavily damaged the ozone layer above the Balkans. The thunder heard during storms for several weeks after the 78-day bombing was unnaturally loud, the lightening spectacular. On the other hand, the sun baked with a special vengeance that summer. The difference in its intensity was palpable; sunburn occurred in a matter of minutes.

All the above environmental havoc happened during the watch of Al Gore, the freshly anointed Nobel Peace Prize winner, while he served as vice president of the United States. No words of protest were heard coming from him at that time.

Efraim Diversoli... why not state that he is a Jew?

If he was a Muslim, you would not find one mainstream report that neglected to shove that fact down your throat. Is this self-censorship in the press? And do I have to troll the blogs to find the kind of info about Government-funded Jewish crime paid for by our tax dollars???

Why Ron Paul Scares the GOP

There used to be an organization for people who believed in a truly limited government — limited taxes, limited spending, limited interference in individual lives and limited intervention in foreign affairs. That organization was known as the Republican Party. But the only one of those beliefs that still motivates the G.O.P. establishment is limited taxes. In 2008, people who still hold all of them joined the Ron Paul Revolution.

22 year old crook sells 300 million of faulty ammo to US millitary

With the award last January of a federal contract worth as much as nearly $300 million, the company, AEY Inc., which operates out of an unmarked office in Miami Beach, became the main supplier of munitions to Afghanistan's army and police forces.

Since then, the company has provided ammunition that is more than 40 years old and in decomposing packaging, according to an examination of the munitions by The New York Times and interviews with American and Afghan officials. Much of the ammunition comes from the aging stockpiles of the old Communist bloc, including stockpiles that the State Department and NATO have determined to be unreliable and obsolete, and have spent millions of dollars to have destroyed.

In purchasing munitions, the contractor has also worked with middlemen and a shell company on a federal list of entities suspected of illegal arms trafficking.

Moreover, tens of millions of the rifle and machine-gun cartridges were manufactured in China, making their procurement a possible violation of American law. The company's president, Efraim E. Diveroli, was also secretly recorded in a conversation that suggested corruption in his company's purchase of more than 100 million aging rounds in Albania, according to audio files of the conversation.

Who Speaks for Islam? What a Billion Muslims Really Think

* "As we have seen in the [Gallup] data, resentment against the West comes from what Muslims perceive as the West's hatred and denigration of Islam; the Western belief that Arabs and Muslim are inferior; and their [Muslims'] fear of Western intervention, domination, or occupation" (141).

* "As our [Gallup's] data has demonstrated, the primary cause of broad-based anger and anti-Americanism is not a clash of civilizations but the perceived effect of U.S. foreign policy in the Muslim world" (156).

* "[The Gallup data shows that] contrary to what the 'They Hate Our Freedom' thesis might predict, Muslims do not recommend or insist upon changes to Western culture or social norms as the path to better [Western-Muslim] relations. ... Rather they call on the West to show greater respect for Islam, and they emphasize policy-related issues [U.S. interventionism; unqualified support for Israel; and protection for authoritarian Arab regimes]" (159).

THE VATICAN MUST SHOW GOOD WILL TOWARDS MUSLIMS

The highly-publicized conversion to Catholicism of a naturalized Italian citizen of Egyptian origin this week once again illustrates the uneasy relations between Islam and western Christianity.

The problem, of course, doesn't lie in the conversion itself. People after all should be free to choose their faith and way of life without coercion. The Quran itself declares that "let there be no compulsion in religion."

But the problem lies in the vindictive atmosphere surrounding the conversion ceremony, including the anti-Islamic allusions and insinuations.
