THE VATICAN MUST SHOW GOOD WILL TOWARDS MUSLIMS

The highly-publicized conversion to Catholicism of a naturalized Italian citizen of Egyptian origin this week once again illustrates the uneasy relations between Islam and western Christianity.

The problem, of course, doesn't lie in the conversion itself. People after all should be free to choose their faith and way of life without coercion. The Quran itself declares that "let there be no compulsion in religion."

But the problem lies in the vindictive atmosphere surrounding the conversion ceremony, including the anti-Islamic allusions and insinuations.

Have all the critics of the public baptism also been critics of the murder of Father Ragheed Ganni and Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho?

Have the folks denouncing the peaceful conversion also denounced the violent murders?

Have they?

"THE VATICAN MUST SHOW GOOD WILL TOWARDS MUSLIMS" or else what? If it isn't the goodwill you envision and your idea of good will - which is cowering - what will you do?

It will be ok for Islam to bomb the Vatican or attempt to murder the Pope? Maybe fly some planes into Saint Peters?

Nobody wants to hear these demands, everyone wants to hear the apologies for Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho, Ragheed Ganni, Sister Cecilia Hanna Moshi...
