Serbia leader's narrow victory eases fears on fate of Kosovo

The European Union was quick to congratulate Mr Tadic.

The election outcome will alleviate fears in the West that Serbia will react violently to the expected declaration of independence from Kosovo.

Both Mr Tadic and Mr Nikolic oppose Kosovo's independence, but Mr Tadic has ruled out the use of force and would probably seek to preserve close ties with the EU and the US even if they recognise Kosovo statehood.
